The most honest answer is “accurate for what?” Today’s high temperature, rain at one address, a storm track, and a seasonal outlook are different forecast problems. Each needs its own time horizon and measure. A forecast can be useful for planning a morning while still being too uncertain to settle an outdoor event several days away.
Distance changes confidence
Observations constrain a near-term forecast. Farther out, small differences in the atmosphere compound and possible outcomes spread. That is why responsible forecasts update and why a range can be more meaningful than a single value. Look for issue time, location, probability, and the next update. For hazardous conditions, official local watches and warnings should take priority over commentary.
As a work-from-home parent of a preschooler in northern New Jersey, I often translate weather into ordinary decisions: playground now, errands later, event indoors. I compare the forecast window to the actual decision window. A chance of rain “today” is less useful than timing and location when the question is whether the next hour is workable.
Verification needs more than one badge
Temperature error can be measured in degrees. Rain probability can be checked for calibration across many forecasts. Storm paths involve timing and distance. A universal accuracy percentage hides those differences. Better forecast sources explain what they verify and retain enough history to show how performance changes with horizon.
A weather forecast is best read as updated guidance, not a failed promise whenever conditions shift. Use the shortest relevant horizon, check the timestamp, prefer official risk information, and notice whether the provider explains uncertainty in terms that match your decision.
